In Memory of Irv Eggert
In Memory of Irv Eggert
When I moved to Denver Colorado in 1977 I got to know Irv
and Vera Eggert. Irv was a man then who
loved the church and loved the Bible and truly respected those who were serious
about their walk with the Lord.
A bit later Irv was involved in helping to start a new
congregation in Denver and in that context I was blessed to work with Irv for
about twenty five years. I was the
minister at the SE church of Christ in Aurora and Irv and his wife Vera were
actively helping to make the congregation the best it could be for God’s
glory. They opened their home to small
groups and worked at building up the people of all ages. They “adopted” several different families who
needed and wanted a deeper relationship with God and with each other in Jesus
Christ.
Irv was great at visiting people. He visited visitors to church services. He visited people in hospitals. He reached out to anyone who needed
encouragement but always with a kind of quietness and dignity that was unique
to him. I was a preacher who was
somewhat loud and bombastic in my approach and so to visit and learn from Irv
was great for me.
Irv did not travel the path of others thought because he had
his own thoughts. He was not a blind
follower of anyone. He studied the word
for himself and was willing to stand and defend what he believed but did so in
a loving, kind and unity building way.
Irv was an independent thinker and so am I so you can imagine the kind
of discussions we had as good friends, but he was always humble and kind to me
even when we disagreed about things. He
was a “gentleman” in every sense of the word.
He made me think and rethink things.
In his older years I suspect he had to slow down some of his
activities for God, but I know the last I spoke to him on the phone a few
months ago he was still on track with God and I remember us having prayer
together over the phone as we often did.
After working in ministry with a variety of preachers and
elders and Christians I can say that of all I have worked with there was non
more loyal to God, his family and his friends that Irv. His memory still blesses my life.
I hope and pray comfort to all his family and friends.
I am sorry I will not be able to attend the memorial service
in Canton on Saturday because of some family situations and health issues, but
my heart will be there with the group being encouraged by Irv’s memory.
John 14.
14 “Do
not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many
rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to
prepare a place for you? 3 And
if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with
me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Thank you God for saving the soul of Irv Eggert. He was a blessing to so many of us.
