9.30- Marriage as a banquet

9.30-

Happy Anniversary to Wayne and Cora Sue Wishard, 9.30.34

Mom and Dad’s Anniversary

They were married on 9.30.1934 in the back of a meat market where hamburger meat was probably selling for about twelve cents a pound.

Mom wrote in her diary that several things were a bit unusual about their wedding and honeymoon. The only dress she could find that she liked was bought for twelve dollars, but it was not white, but black. They did not have anyone present at their wedding from their family and friends.

The minister lived in the back of a meat market and that is where they were married. Somewhat interesting that many of their years were spent, raising beef, cutting beef, wrapping and selling beef and eating beef around the table with family, kids, grandkids, great grandkids and their friends.

In a way they had nothing. According to mom’s diary, “We bought at bedroom suit for $35, two pair of springs and Mrs. Wishard bought us a mattress. The wedding was on a Sunday and they stayed the first three days at her parents house, then walked over to his mother’s house and that was their honeymoon. In a way that had nothing, but in another way they had everything.

They loved life. They loved their family and friends and had a larger than life experience with them. They worked hard and played hard. They didn’t try to show others how much they were in love. They knew that they had this love thing and that was all that mattered. Mom noted in her diary that people said, “they were the courtingest couple”

We gathered around their table for hamburgers and steak and corn on the cob, tomatoes, fried okra, black eye peas, pecan pie and homemade hand cranked ice cream.

They did enjoy their marriage. They wanted the children to grow up and find the love of their life and move out and move on to enjoy their own family life and so we have.

On this day I thank God for their love. We celebrated their 50th in 1984 and their 60th in 1994 and they were together even through the hard times of their later years.

There is not greater banquet on earth than being a part of the family of God and a loving family on earth.

Happy Anniversary! Mom and Dad.

Matthew 19.
“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’[a] and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’[b]? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
