In the afternoon of 9.8.03 Sheila and I went to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. After the events of the last six days I remember the words we saw there from the heart of A. Lincoln.
I have appreciated the humility he brought to his job in trying to heal the wounds of a divided nation.
I come from a family who has needed a lot of mercy as we walked through this life. Were it not for the mercy of God and His kindness expressed through his people after I had messed things up I do not know where I would be right now. I suspect I would be dead.
I have gotten myself out on many limbs and then sawed them off and have fallen to the ground. Someone in my family and spiritual family have picked me up and helped me dust myself off and move forward. This has happened over and over for me.
Back to the Lincoln Memorial
"With malice toward none with charity for all with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right let us strive on to finish the work we are in to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan ~ to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."
After the hard experiences for our nation in the last six days I am praying and asking for my family and friends to pray along the lines Lincoln had on his mind.
With malice toward none.
With charity for all.
Striving to finish the work we are in to bind up the nation’s wounds.
To care for the one’s who have borne the battle and their widow and orphan.
Prayers for the family of the five who lost their lives last Wednesday and others who were injured.
Prayers for their families.
To do all we can to achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and all nations.
