6.1-
Our hearts hurt with the people of Buffalo. At least since 1990, we have been drawn into the work of racial reconciliation. Maybe because of our wonderful family God has given us.
We worked in DFW and Denver most of our years. In Denver we had some meetings that were focused on unity, peace and love in spite of heartbreak and loss. One of my friends lost his brother to a gang shooting and he was not involved in any gang. He said his family said to him that he must not hate the man or the gang. Bitterness and hate will not overcome evil. Evil must be overcome with good.
We have had at least three church and synagogue shootings in my own memory here in DFW. Hate spreads, but love, grace, mercy and peace overcomes evil.
We are thankful to have had good support from all kinds of people in raising our family. Patricia Raybon is an author who has done great writing on race and other matters. She lived near us in Denver has impacted our nation with her writing and Sheila and I personally.
We had two friends help us with racial understanding who are in heaven now. One was a preacher for a downtown Denver church, Cass Wade from New York area. He shared my, Larry, birthday and love for Jesus, food and friendship. He and another African American minister and another white guy from our congregation shared the same birthday. We, the four of us would hit Denny's for the free lunches and tell them we were "brothers".
We had a good time building up each other and our families and churches together. Love can build a bridge. God help us overcome evil with good.
1 John 4.
19 We love, because He first loved us. 20 If someone says, “I love God,” and yet he hates his brother or sister, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother and sister whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God must also love his brother and sister.
