This Night Twelve Years Ago

On this night twelve years ago Josephine Harris did not know what would happen to her the next day.   Fire Captain Jay Jonas and firefighter Tommy Falco didn't either.  They probably went to bed and kissed their loved ones good night unaware of the crisis that was ahead of them the next day.

Josephine Harris was a 59 year old bookkeeper in the North Tower of the World Trade center.  When the plane hit her building, though she was crippled from an auto accident started, she started making her way down the stairs.  Jonas and Falco were going down the stairs and trying to get out because they knew they South Tower had already fallen.  They came across Josephine in the stairwell.  She told them to go on without her as she was out of energy on the 27th floor.  They would not go down without taking her with them. They helped her.  They carried her. At the fourth floor they stopped because Josephine could go no further.  They would not go on without her.  They were trying to find a chair to carry her on when the North Tower collapsed.  Jonas said he knew he was dead.  But the building fell and their was a pocket of protection in this spot on the fourth floor.  All above died.  All below died.  These three lived

The heart of these men and the heart of this woman saved them.  Why?  No one knows.  The fact was the men stayed with her and they all were saved.  Jesus said that a shepherd who has 100 sheep and one is missing he goes after that sheep and when he finds the sheep he comes home rejoicing.

There is an inner spiritual health and joy in being loyal to the people around us.  Jesus is the good shepherd.  He laid down his life for His sheep.  A great friend lays down his life for his friends.  This is the model of our teacher Jesus.  Thank God for good examples of men and women who cared on 9/11/01.  May they rest in peace.

When you go to bed this evening or when you read this I hope you will say a prayer of thanks for your family and friends who have carried you along in your hard times.  Love them and let them know by your words and actions.
