Pecan pie. I like it bought and brought home from a store, but I like it best when made at home with a personal touch of someone whom you dearly love and then eat it with someone you enjoy being with. Reed was a man who loved a good piece of pecan pie.
I remember visiting with him once regarding how the death of a Christian should be thought of and he said it should be a celebration of life and hope for the next life. He mentioned pecan pie as one of the favorite foods he loved to eat at times of celebration.
I remember him saying something to me like this, "When I'm gone and you think of me I hope you think of pecan pie. How many times mother would bake this pie and we would sit around the table and enjoy this desert to end a special meal."
Reed believed in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He lived his life in service to his fellow man. He served as a house parent at a children's home for many years. Many of them looked to him for encouragement and guidance and an example of what a man could be.
Luke records this incident after the resurrection of Jesus. I have hope that when my own work is finished down here I will have a reunion with read and we will sit down at the great banquet with Jesus together.
Luke 24.
28 And they approached the village where they were going, and He acted as though He were going farther. 29 But they urged Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day [i]is now nearly over.” So He went in to stay with them. 30 When He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from [j]their sight. 32 They said to one another, “[k]Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was [l]explaining the Scriptures to us?” 33 And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven and those who were with them, 34 saying, “The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35 They began to relate [m]their experiences on the road and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.
