10.2-Gladys Self moved to be with Jesus on this day. 2007

10.2

Twelve years ago today in a Plano hospital my mother-in- law, Gladys Self, moved from earth to be with Jesus. She had a stroke a few days earlier so the family had been by her side. About 1 pm, my father-in-law, Ralph Self, and I decided we should go take a lunch break and Sheila would stay with her mom.

Sheila and her Mom had a close relationship for Sheila’s whole life. While we were gone to eat, Sheila moved over to her Mom and placed her cheek on her Mom’s forehead. She held her face there for a while and all of a sudden her breathing stopped. It was a very peaceful moment according to Sheila’s description. Shocked, Sheila moved to the end of the bed and watched her chest. She called a nurse, then me and then, her brother, Stan. Yes, it was her last breath.
Amazing providence from God. They were together at Sheila’s first breath and Sheila there for Gladys’ last breath.

I read this morning in my devotional reading that the average human breathes about 630 million times. On 11.25.25 Gladys started taking these breaths.

Life is a vapor. It’s like the mist of the morning dew. Gladys used her breaths to do many small things that made a big difference. It may seem like a small thing to prepare an after-school snack for your daughter and visit with her when she came in. But every day for 100’s of days snowballs into deep and intense love between a mother and a daughter.

I like the quote:
“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”

Gladys used some of her 630 million breathes to tell Bible stories to children in Sunday School. Many breaths were used preparing meals for her husband, children and grandchildren. She was diligent to make her home a taste of heaven – clean, orderly, lovely, peaceful, warm and friendly.
Then on this day twelve years ago Jesus fulfilled His promise to her. He came and took her to the only perfect home, heaven.

Today I am thankful for all the breaths that Gladys took and the millions that blessed Sheila and me, all of her family and friends.

Thank you, God, for the life of Gladys Self.

John 14.

14 “Do not let your heart be troubled; [a]believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas *said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
