Worn out people or worn out Bibles

There are several things I love about my friend, *.  He knows how to make disciples.  He has three sons that he and his wife raised to love people.  One of their sons I met recently is warm and friendly and a teacher/preacher of Jesus.  One is medical doctor who goes on mission trips to help and heal those in desperate need.  He has another son who I have not gotten to know yet.

*is a big guy with a bigger heart.  He knows how to laugh and make you laugh.  He sits beside me at one of my men’s Bible studies and he ready to listen and ready to comment when the time is right.  He brings his Bible and often brings an excellent commentary on the text we are studying.  He is a man who delights in God’s word.  He delights in giving short answers when some of us want to give longer answers.

Someone looked at his Bible yesterday and said, “*., looks like you have been using that Bible.”  I laughed and accused him of dragging it behind his car.  The fact of the matter is that *.’s power to keep his joy in spite of his sudden heartbreaking loss of his beloved wife is powered by God’s word.  His strength to keep going as an encourager of others though he has many challenges himself is by the Spirit of God.  His right knee was in a wrap yesterday and yet his spirit was strong.

I love my buddy, *. and most of the people who know him feel the same.  The reason according to him is the grace of God.

It is one thing to read the Bible, it is another thing to open your heart and let the Bible read you.  *. has done both.   So often we are worn out because we are not wearing out our Bibles.

2 Timothy 3.
12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
